Models, friends & girlfriend 95% of the time, I set them up according to what I want in the painting (plus I've studied the figure a great deal and draw the figure at least twice a week - model sessions that friends and I set up).
I have & can work from photos as well, photos can get tricky though (just my opinion) in that the camera lens can throw the proportions of the figure off, just have to know what to look for, but don't get me wrong, working from photos is fine (hate it when some artist say "you can only work from live models) I'm just lucky in that I have a great source of models to work from.
